August is Olympic Lifting Bias Month! Yup, this month we are going to spend a little more focus on our beloved Olympic lifts!
Maybe you are wondering why we are always making you do these difficult, often foreign, nit-picky movements. Well, I can answer that! You may have heard me yammering on about it in your on-ramp classes, during classes or even read about it in our literature, but we have this definition of “fitness” that more or less says you have to be competent at everything to be able to kick life in its dingly-danglies.
Dynamax (yes, the people that make those lovable medicine balls) has this list of “10 General Physical Skills” that sums these “competencies” all up. They are:
Cardiovascular/Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Agility, Coordination, Balance and Accuracy
Now think about the snatch and clean and jerk and what it takes to be proficient at them. Yeah, pretty much everything on that list. Furthermore, if you lack any of these skills, the only way to improve them is to work at them (i.e. practice olympic lifts).
See how that works? Neat huh? That is why we love them so much.
Well, that and the fact they are fun, challenging and once you start down the path: addictive. Not to forget that doing them will make you better, faster, stronger.
Olympic Lifting Bias? What does it mean for me?
Honestly, from a day to day training standpoint, not a whole lot is going to change. We are still going to WOD, we are still going to work on strength, mobility, endurance… everything really. Hell, we already do this stuff-a-plenty, BUT… we are simply going to do it a little more, throw in a lot more drills and bias everything else a little more towards improving upon these movements.
On the other hand, being giant data nerds, we are also going to take this as an opportunity to track much of the stuff we do in the next month or so. This will include everything from video analysis, strength gains and improvements in mobility/movements.
It is going to be fun.
When do we start!
We already have! Sort of. This week we are ramping up for it by gathering some metrics. We tested our Clean and Jerk on Monday and we will have a few other “buy-ins” so to speak throughout the rest of the week.
